Chennai – Mahabalipuram – Pondicherry - Chennai
Starting from the hotel in Chennai after Breakfast , drive down the scenic East Coast Road and reach Mahabalipuram.
Located on the Coromandel Coast along the Bay of Bengal, Mahabalipuram is a perfect getaway for spiritual seekers and beach lovers alike. The most popular tourist sight is the UNESCO World Heritage Group of Monuments that comprises several intricately carved temples and rock-cut monuments dating back to 7th and 8th centuries. The Five Rathas (Chariots) and the Shore temple are the major places of interest, and one cannot miss the magnifique carvings on them that continue to amaze visitors to this day.
Another important sight is the Krishna’s Butterball, which is a huge natural rock that rests on a hillside, apparently defying all laws of gravity. After a day out sightseeing, head to the beach – a long stretch of white sand edging the calm waters, surrounded by casuarina trees, making it a picturesque spot to spend a relaxing evening. Here, you can also get to try out activities like surfing, boat rides and deep sea fishing.
Later proceed to Pondicherry for overnight stay.
Bounded by the state of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, commonly called ‘Pondy’ sits along the South Eastern coast of India. Colonized by the Dutch, the English and the French, the latter left the biggest impact here, by far.
Cobbled streets, boutiques, cafés, a promenade and seafront; you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve ended up in France during your visit to Pondy. Pondy is a wonderful time travel experience to a completely different era. The town is divided into two distinct parts; the French part of the quiet town is towards the sea. This is where you can find the bright mustard and white colors of the French Quarter, and bursting bougainvillea alongside clean European-style streets.
The Major attractions Include :
Located about nine miles from Pondy lies the ‘City of Dawn’, Auroville. It’s a universal town where people across the world, irrespective of caste, creed, culture or country, live and work together in harmony and peace. This township is the perfect example of ‘unity in diversity’. The town is divided into several zones and the major ones include the Peace Zone, the International Zone and the Residential Zone. The highlight of the Peace Zone is the Matrimandir, where devotees meditate; the Residential Zone is where you can stay among the Aurovillians and the International Zone is comprised of community halls where several events are held on a regular basis. Just spend time here and soak up in the local atmosphere!
Sri Aurobindo Ashram
Established in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo (a renowned spiritual guru) and a French woman, called ‘the Mother’, Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a must-visit for those seeking a spiritual retreat. Retreats here involve different meditation sessions and yoga practices that will transcend you into a state of peace.
Most of the locals speak French and “The Eglise de Notre Dame des Anges” church still celebrates mass in French once a week.
Enjoy the sunset at Ousteri Lake
One of the best spots in Pondy to enjoy the soothing sunset is Ousteri Lake, a man-made lake characterized by mudflats and marshy lands. In addition, the lake is populated with a wide variety of residential and migratory birds, which makes it a paradise for bird lovers. Keep your eyes peeled for golden orioles, egrets, white ibises, openbill storks, greater flamingos and white-breasted water hens.
Pondycherry also has:
The Botanical Garden, Pondicherry Museum, French War Memorial, Gelato factory, and cafés serving French crêpes. These are some of the places you can visit if you wish to, during your stay !
Return by road to Chennai with fond memories of this famous French colony.
